Rachel Roy & Seu Jorge Bring The Beaches Of Brazil To Macy’s
“I have always been in awe of how Brazilian women dress and carry themselves,” confesses Rachel Roy. So it was only natural that the designer team up with Brazilian musician Seu Jorge for her latest collaborative collection for Macy’s: a line of clothing, shoes, handbags, and jewelry that channels the “unbreakable spirit and tradition of the Brazilian people”.
The partnership began last year when Roy traveled to Jorge’s home and was inspired by the country’s rich heritage, gorgeous landscape, and effortless warm weather style. She praised the sensuality of the Brazilian women she encountered on her trip at an event we attended this week: “They are very feminine but strong and embrace bold colors and prints, as well as their sexuality”. Don’t believe her? Allow Gisele to demonstrate. Roy also raved that “the rich artisan culture that thrives there is awe-inspiring…I bought beautiful handmade jewelry while I was there”. And, while we’re not sure it was the same stuff she picked up on the beach, we were definitely not alone in admiring the jewels the designer sported when she visited Macy’s with Jorge, setting off her enviable evil-eye nail art.
At the launch, Roy explained why Jorge was the ideal collaborator for the collection. “For me, he really embodies the spirit of Brasil, their voice, how they feel about politics, life, art and love,” she said. He also embodies a certain artistic temperament, it seems. “Like all creative people he knows what he likes”.
For this line that meant easy shapes, bright colors, and a smattering of Catholic motifs that even the less-than-saintly among us will no doubt enjoy. Jorge pointed to the layered pendant celebrating Saint George as his favorite piece in the collection, while Roy chose the black and white strapless sundress that she rocked at the FEED Foundation concert last month. Prices range from $24-$149.00, and each piece of clothing bears the name of a Brazilian catwalker (think Gisele, Isabeli, and Cintia), so you can channel your favorite top-earning supermodel without having to break the bank.
Before he sat down with his guitar to serenade the crowd at Macy’s, Jorge left us with some words of wisdom. “Believe in yourself, trust in yourself, care about yourself. That’s the message inside this collection.” A worthy sentiment, indeed.
