Dutch Fashion Magazine Apologizes For Calling Rihanna The N-Word

In totally awful news, Dutch fashion magazine Jackie has called Rihanna the N-word.

According to ONTD, the offending article translates as such:

She has street cred, she has a ghetto ass and she has a golden throat. Rihanna, the good girl gone bad, is the ultimate n***abitch and displays that gladly, and for her that means: what’s on can come off. If that means she’ll be on stage half naked, then so be it. But Dutch winters aren’t like Jamaican ones, so pick a clothing style in which your daughter can resist minus ten. No to the big sunglasses and the pornheels, and yes to the tiger print, pink shizzle and everything that glitters. Now let’s hope she won’t beat anybody up at daycare.

To add insult to injury, Rihanna is from Barbados — not Jamaica. The magazine’s editor-in-chief Eva Hoeke has since responded to the controversy via Facebook:

Dear readers,

First: thanks for all your responses. We are of course very fed up over this and especially very shocked. However I’m glad that we’re engaging in a dialogue on this page — not everybody does that. Thanks for this. Other than that I can be brief about this: this should have never happened. Period. While the author meant no harm — the title of the article was intended as a joke — it was a bad joke, to say the least. And that slipped through my, the editor-in-chief’s, fingers. Stupid, painful and sucks for all concerned. The author has been addressed on it, and now I can only ensure that these terms will no longer end up in the magazine. Furthermore I hope that you all believe there was absolutely no racist motive behind the choice of words. It was stupid, it was naive to think that this was an acceptable form of slang — you hear it all the time on tv and radio, then your idea of what is normal apparently shifts — but it was especially misguided: there was no malice behind it. We make our magazine with love, energy and enthusiasm, and it can sometimes happen that someone is out of line. And then you can only do one thing: apologize. And hope that others wish to accept it.

From the bottom of my heart I say it again: we never intended to offend anyone. And I mean that.

Regards,
Eva Hoeke

Wow. There is clearly some serious lack of editorial oversight, among other things, going on at Jackie. Unfortunately, this isn’t the only such incident involving Rihanna as of late — just this weekend she tweeted about a racist man she encountered during a trip to Portugal.

I find it silly that she called HERSELF a nigga on her twitter page in the form of a hashtag. You know, if people get so OFFENDED by the word why don’t they stop self-referencing it if it’s so negative? So, what, only a black person can call another black person that word? There should not be rules – the word itself should just not be used if people are going to complain when a non-black person uses it. It’s been almost 150 years since slavery ended in the U.S. so I’m really so over this word.

I don’t believe that a magazine that ignorant exists..guess they’re still in a third world over there..has to be…this article alone, was spoken like a street rat speaks to her other street rat friend; not a magazine. Apology, she doesn’t want…It’s too late for that..she wants you to pick up a BOOK or a “life program” class, and learn to be humans…   laughing..omg,, inventing a country that’s shes from…told you, no homework, street rat talk..G-d bless you…you sure need it…   you know what’s sad, you’re standing there, in your office, or cave, haha that was good…and waving ur hands and saying it was a joke…  that happens with bullies and being detached from the world…how can anyone think anyone else is different from themselves..unless they really hate themselves, and are projecting on anything or anyone else…I’m sorry, on behalf of these nit wits…like I’m reading in Don M Ruiz, “its their story in their minds”…don’t even give it a second thought…you’re beautiful..just went with my family to see you in California..amazing girl.. u sang and looked hot…peace and Happy Holidays all…

Yeah, I don’t like that word. I mean, yeah, you do hear it all the time, but in certain contexts you don’t use it. I.e. I know they aren’t the New Yorker or anything, but they also aren’t a rap video. So whatever. They didn’t mean it in a mean way, but ffs, pick your inside voice appropriately. Also, Rihanna isn’t Jamaican.

Even if you remove the word “niggabitch” the article is still just as offensive. The opening line is enough for me to stop reading. Seems like she was trying really hard and failed miserably!
