Anatomy Of An Outfit: Rihanna Edition
by Julia Rubin | 4:00 pm, September 25th, 2010
This morning we were perusing some photos, and we came across one of Rihanna looking all sorts of ridiculous. Sometimes we question her sartorial choices, but this particular getup seemed weirdly familiar. And then we realized: this look is entirely derivative. Of what exactly? We’ll tell you.

Please, think of the animations.
In the meantime, enjoy the html version below. I guess. If that's your thing.
1. Let's start here...
Rihanna is stealing from not one, not two, but FOUR different looks. Can you spot who she's channeling?
2. Top: Lady Gaga
Perhaps the outfit's most blatant ripoff is of Lady Gaga 's electrical tape nipple pasties, circa April 2009. At least Gaga looked a little provocative because of her sheer shirt. Rihanna opted for over-the-shirt tape. Curious.
3. Hair: Jessica Rabbit
Rihanna's red mane is so clearly inspired by Jessica Rabbit. Jessica Rabbit is not a real person. Relatedly, Rihanna's hair is not a real color.
4. Hat: Aretha Franklin
Remember when Aretha Franklin wore the greatest hat of all time when she sang at Obama 's inauguration? Because we do. And it was amazing. Rihanna's wimpy bow hat pales in comparison.
5. Pants: Annie Hall
Slouchy khakis? A reference to Diane Keaton in Annie Hall , perhaps? Because Rihanna's definitely not wearing them for the style quotient.
