WATCH: Rihanna’s New Video Misses The Mark On Chinese Culture

The video is out! And has made good on its promise to be both very pretty and very culturally confused.

We’ve already written about why the “gangsta goth geisha” concept that Rihanna tweeted about back in March is at best misinformed, and at worst quite offensive. According to MTV:

Rihanna’s look is also a standout as she appears in several forms: multi-armed goddess, heartbroken geisha and fierce warrior princess.

Erm, ok. Multi-armed goddess? That would be Hindu imagery – a religion far, far more common in India (as in, only 0.01% of Chinese population practices Hinduism.) Geisha? Now that would be Japan. Warrior princess? Ok, that one we’ll give her. Chinese warrior girls are fierce.
If you ignore the cultural discrepancies, the video is actually pretty great, even if the song leaves something to be desired – RiRi rocks the thigh-high slit, battles Chris Martin in the desert, and lounges in latex – but it’s hard to ignore something that is right there in the song title. And frankly there’s no reason to ignore them. The fashion industry isn’t exactly known for it’s cultural sensitivity, and everyone could certainly stand to put a little more effort into learning when using culturally-entrenched imagery is appropriate and when it’s just plain offensive.

What do you think? Do you wish the writers had worked harder to get their references straight?

actually, we had a guanyin in our Chinese living room when I was as kid…until I broke one of her arms off. WOOPS! So yes, my people have one too! That said, they may have just shared one, and didn’t even know it. In any case, I’m not personally offended.

“heartbroken geisha?” you obviously dont know what a geisha looks like. No part of her look is japanese.

And like someone pointed out already, the multi-arm thing is also buddhist imagery, which is a huge part of chinese culture.

Whoever worked on the video obviously did more research than you.

yeah stylite – I’m disappointed in you again. First off this is a Coldplay song so picking on Rihanna is just too aggressive - blame them if you want to discuss culture. Keep your comments on the clothes since that’s what you’re best at.

and pick a link that works next time… the vevo channel is the only place to watch the official version. Please do better research next time.

Hmm…Guanyin is a multi-armed goddess of China and is often featured in Chinese cultural performances, so you’re not correct that she is missing the mark with this reference. Sorry.

and ninjas and taiko drums would be…(hint J*******)?? whereas flying martial arts and the cheongsam she’s wearing would be…(hint C******)?? All in all, it’s a pretty f**king sad mess of whatever the video producers cared to imagine through their completely ignorant/careless western lens. Chinese/Japanese, what’s the difference really, right guys??

At least the song sucks even more than the video. (Also good to know Chris Martin is willing to sell out completely. Nicely done all.)

All this oversensitivity that is happening lately in the spotlight is rediculous. This is the USA offensive to the rst of the world from the time we said we wanted independance. This is hte melting pot not the keep everything segratated pot. If modern concepualization does not fit your profile of appropriate attire or presentation then you go dress in something 300 years old or older and stick to your narrow minded concept of cultural insolence. If progress adn cultural melding is offensive to other countries of cultures, then let them be offended and let the USA keep moving forward with blending them into something stronger and better.
