The Truth Behind The Rihanna For TopShop Rumors

Earlier this week, Rihanna set off a flurry of rumors about a possible TopShop collaboration after she tweeted about having lunch with owner Sir Phillip Green and his business partner (and judge extraordinaire) Simon Cowell. But is there any truth to the breathless speculation?

The dinner date notwithstanding, the collaboration rumors aren’t exactly out of left field. Earlier this year, Rihanna worked with the British retailer on a styling contest, the five winners of which received an all day personal shopping session with the singer herself. And it’s not like the artist formerly known as Robyn Fenty is a sartorial wallflower — Rihanna is as well known for her creative ensembles (and Ronald McDonald hair) as she is for her singles. Unfortunately for fans everywhere, WWD says the collab is a no go. While a TopShop spokesperson refused to comment, industry sources told the publication that “the dinner was ‘purely social,’ and… no fashion deal is in the works.”

In October, Green announced that TopShop would be dialing back on its partnership with Kate Moss. Though the supermodel will continue to work on capsule collections for the brand, she’ll no longer be releasing semi-annual collections — which certainly leaves room for a new and equally stylish bold-faced name. If not Rihanna, who do you think TopShop should work with? While entirely unlikely, we’d love to see what Carey Mulligan would come up with.
