Rodarte Wears Their Love Of Movies On Their T-Shirt Sleeves
We pretty much adore anything Rodarte walks down the runway and on the racks. We were beyond thrilled when they released a series of t-shirts that were only somewhat expensive, rather than off-the-charts unattainable.
Now, Kate and Laura Mulleavy are at it again, this time designing a line of tees in collaboration with Rialto Pictures to celebrate the 50th anniversary and rerelease of the French film Breathless. (Don’t worry. We’d never heard of it either.)
Barney’s New York will sell two Rodarte t-shirt designs as well as feature windows designed by the Mulleavy sisters in celebration of Breathless‘ anniversary. Rodarte will also be instrumental in creating a new poster with the help of graphic designer Patrick Li, who has worked with the likes of Alexander Wang, Calvin Klein, and Chanel.
Anyone who is familiar with the Mulleavy sisters knows they are huge movie buffs. But why the attachment to Breathless?
“[Luc Godard] reformulated the visual language through which stories are told,” Laura Mulleavy said. “He is a renegade. In ‘Breathless,’ he broke all of the rules and formulas within the lexicon of film. His use of wordplay, his interest in time, and his ability to translate stream-of-consciousness writing to images was groundbreaking.”
Kate agreed and expressed that the two have been influenced greatly by the director.
“We have been influenced by Godard’s rejection of the status quo and have approached our work with the same desire to create outside preexisting boundaries.”
The t-shirts, one of which features the “New York Herald Tribune” logo that was displayed prominently on a shirt from the original film, will go on sale this spring at Barney’s New York, and abroad at Colette and Dover Street Market.
