Cover Model Rooney Mara Talks To Allure About Her Style Evolution
Rooney Mara is officially the cover model of the moment. One year ago, the actress appeared as The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo‘s Lisbeth Salander on the cover of W. This year she’s scored a trifecta of sorts: first Vogue, and now Dazed & Confused and Allure.
Mara spoke to Allure about shaving her head to play Salander (“People always ask, ‘Were you crying when they cut your hair?’ And it didn’t freak me out at all. I was really happy to do it.”), a role which also found her piercing her nipple:
“It was actually not that painful. Everyone thinks that would be the most painful. I’m naked quite a lot in the movie. And I thought, She has it in the book, and she should have it [in the movie]. Because of all the tattoos and the makeup and the piercings, and the physical transformations my body has to go through, it would always feel sort of like I was in costume, even if I was naked. It just felt like a good one to get—a necessary one to get.”
In case you were wondering, she kept the nipple ring in preparation for the film’s sequels. Mara also discussed something we’ve noticed: her evolving style. “I used to wear a lot of girly, frilly things,” she explained. “Now I buy things that are more comfortable, and more utilitarian, and sort of boyish.”
Her look sure has changed a whole lot in the past couple of years. Don’t believe us? Check out our photographic evidence (as well as those covers!) below:
