Prince Charles Has Never Gotten Dressed By Himself

Remember how Prince William and Kate Middleton said they wanted to live a low-key life with not that many servants? Well now that we know the extent of some of those servants’ duties, we understand why. A new expose about the British royal family written by one of its former servants details all of the peculiar, unfortunate and downright weird things the royal wardrobe minders have to do every day.

The book, called Not In Front Of The Corgis!, features a lot of royal secrets — and naturally we think some of the most interesting ones involve the royal fashion closets. While Kate and Wills dress and undress themselves every day, Prince Charles never has. Never. Not once in his 62 years has the man gone into his closet and taken off that days outfit by himself. Instead, the Prince of Wales has a team of three guys (called valets, pronounce the ‘t’ please) who do all of that for him. They also iron his shoelaces:

The Prince of Wales has never picked up his own clothes or undressed himself — he has three valets to take care of his clothes. If he has several engagements in one day, his valet places several ties in the car so he can change en route. He likes to wear the tie of the organisation or military establishment he is visiting. The record is five changes of tie in one day.

A valet’s other duties include ironing the Prince’s shoelaces whenever his shoes are taken off.

Thank goodness Queen Elizabeth prefers pumps to anything with laces. We don’t know what happens with her clothes at the end of the day, but we do know that she tends to give them away to her staff when she doesn’t want them anymore. Which we’d much rather deal with that than what Earl Mountbatten’s valets had to undergo during her majesty’s birthday.

One had to sprinkle talcum inside Earl Mountbatten’s Life Guard breeches for the Queen’s annual Birthday Parade because they were so tight he could not get them on.

Once on, the earl could not sit down or go to the toilet and when the event was over valet William Evans had to peel the breeches off his master’s sweaty legs.

Huh. Maybe it’s just the men in the royal family who are helpless when it comes to clothes? To read more of the secrets contained in Not In Front Of The Corgis! click here.
