Lady Claims Kate’s Royal Wedding Dress Was ‘An Exact Replica’ Of Her Own

We, like almost everyone else in the world, loved Kate Middleton‘s royal wedding dress. It was elegant and beautiful and timeless. And no, it was not copied from an off-the-rack Kleinfeld‘s gown purchased in Brooklyn in 1991.

A woman named Clare Cushman wrote an impassioned (and pretty off-point) editorial in the Washington Times about how Kate “stole” her dress.

Kate was wearing an exact replica of the wedding dress I had worn — and I was about to celebrate my 20th anniversary! A dress I had picked up in 1991 at Kleinfeld’s in Brooklyn, off the rack and on sale (albeit in the high-end department).

Exact replica? HARDLY, LADY.

I grabbed my wedding photos and showed them to anyone who would look. Yes, they gasped, it was the same lace bodice with the plunging neckline, the slight collar, the bustle in the back anchored by buttons. No, my lace hadn’t been specially designed for me, and my train was considerably shorter. But the cut and design were almost identical.

Sure, the dresses are kind of similar. But “almost identical”? Again, HARDLY. Both are lovely, classic wedding gowns. Neither are particularly revolutionary or original, and nobody ever claimed Kate’s to be so. But that doesn’t mean Sarah Burton copied this lady’s dress. It just doesn’t. But hey, at least she aired her grievances and even got a jab in at Prince William in the last line. Ugh.

Take a look at the picture below. What do you think?

I think it may be the same person as well. Think about it… Clare… Kate… practically the same name. And did you notice they BOTH have brown hair? Gasp. Appalling.

Princess race was married in 1956 and Princess Margaret, who wed in 1960 wore a similar dress. In other words each on copied the other – imitation is the sincerest form of flatter the saying goes.

The dress design has been around for decades and originates from Helen Rose (MGM) who designed Princess Grace. Nothing new, nothing innovative and Kate’s bouquet looked like a child’s. Not overly impressed considering all the hype.

Another difference is the older version she picked up in Kleinfelds has a dropped waist and the bustled skirt begins well below the waist, closer to hips or top of thighs, also Kates skirt is a full sateen style while it seems the 90′s version looks ruffled or tierd and with lace overlay, and like, really?? Do you think someone in London said, “hey let’s rip off a mass produced dress from the 90′s, that looks like it was made for the 80′s and piss off that lady from Brooklyn, or where ever she’s from”

I think the dresses look NOTHING alike, first of all Kate’s is pleated the other lady’s looks gathered or bustled like @Momadison87 said.. This lady needs to get over herself. Seriously, no one wants to copy an off the rack dress from 1991!! Kate’s looks 10x’s better!!

  • BikerK

Hey! My dress had sleeves. Kate copied me too!

  • coffeenmorphine

Well it’s a good thing there are no copyright laws for fashion!!! Oh but wait, no. I think she’s using the word “exact” incorrectly.
