Designer Collaborations Raised $40 Million For The Obama Campaign
Generally speaking, the fashion industry has wholeheartedly thrown its support behind President Barack Obama during the last two election cycles, and has been one of POTUS’s biggest supporters. So it shouldn’t come as any surprise that the Runway To Win collection, a line of designer clothing and accessories that was the brainchild of (guess who?) Anna Wintour, raised a ridiculous amount of money for his campaign. The exact figure? A staggering $40 million.
Twenty-two designers participated in the effort, and the final line included everything from Thakoon scarves to Derek Lam totes to T-shirts by Proenza Schouler. The Obama campaign raised $637.3 million total this election cycle, compared to Romney’s $388.1 million. And once we consider all those dinners that Wintour held to raise money for Obama and the fact that she topped the list of his biggest fundraisers, we think it’s safe to say that the fashion world is responsible for a considerable portion of his campaign funds. Whoever said fashion has no place in politics?
