How Ryan Lochte’s American Flag Grill Almost Cost Him A Medal

American swimmer Ryan Lochte flashed this diamond-studded American flag grill after winning the men’s 400m individual medley Saturday.

But this was one controversial piece of ice — according to this tweet from Wayne Drehs of ESPN, Lochte tried to wear it onto the podium only to be told by an International Olympic Committee official that if he didn’t take it off he wouldn’t receive the piece of ice he really wanted:

Lochte told me he tried to wear his grill on the podium only to have an Olympics official tell him if he did so he wouldn’t get his gold.

Obviously Lochte obliged and took it out rather than be stripped of his medal, but no one stopped him from popping it back in after he got the gold around his neck. If you ask us, the IOC needs to lighten up a bit. The bling was maybe less than classy (and it distracts from those lovely blue eyes of his), but hardly worth withholding a medal that he rightfully won. What do you think of the grill? Cool and patriotic or totally stupid? Check it out below:

Well, the grill is certainly tasteless, but he should be able to wear it if he wants to!

Totally stupid & tasteless. Rules are rules with the IOC. You don’t want to follow them, don’t bother trying out for the Olympics.  Besides, Romney’s doing a great job of making Americans the laughing stock the world over, Lochte & his rediculous grill doesn’t need to add to that.

  • Bucky

Lochte is yet another Olympian who believes that winning a gold medal gives him the power to do whatever he wants, even to the detriment of his team and the USA. The IOC official was correct. What if Lochte had worn Michey Mouse ears to the podium? Come on, Ryan, follow the rules.

it’s pure American thing to push the boundaries of the freedom; it’s never enough!
i wish Americans have more taste and less arrogance!

  • Bobdylan

Its great you think rules are rules and obviously the grill does nothing for him, but he should be aloud to wear it if he wants he worked hard for that gold and nit picky officials should not even try to take that away from him or something so minor as a ridiculous looking grill. Also the British blew Romney’s comment completely out of context although he should be more informed of how easily offended they are in British culture.

Why should he be allowed to wear his grill if he wants? Because he worked hard for that gold? So did every other athlete that won gold, or silver or bronze. Did you see any of those athletes being embarrassing show offs?
Lochte was on the winners podium for all the world to see, & instead of accepting his medal with class like the other athletes, he decides to pull the, “hey look at me being a stupid American,” instead.

Seriously, read Bucky’s post, he hit the nail right on the head. What if Lochte wore micky mouse ears, or dumbo ears, or three legged shorts, when accepting his medal? What would your reaction be then?

What if every medal winner had free reign to wear whatever rediculous accessory they wanted to the winners podium? Can you not see that the medal ceremonies would turn into a circus?
The IOC has rules for a reason, and Lochte’s rediculous grill stunt, is a perfect example of why..

  • Jr

he should have been allowed to wear the grill. it is by no means tasteless. it’s called American pride

  • PaulJ

you must be England. americans have a lot of taste

  • Anonymous

Wrong, it’s not called American pride, it’s called American stupidity. The IOC decides what’s acceptable or what’s not acceptable, not Ryan Lochte.
The grill was tacky & tasteless, & no, he should not have been allowed to wear it.
When your (Lochte) ego becomes so swollen, you ignore the rules of the very organization you’ve been striving to be part of, it’s time to step back and do some serious soul searching.
