WATCH: Models Eat Cotton Balls, Rice Cakes To Stay Thin

We wrote last week how much we think everyone in the fashion industry — and a healthy share of people outside of it — should see “Picture Me,” Sara Ziff’s documentary about what it’s really like to be a model. During New York Fashion Week, Ziff went backstage for The Cut to talk with models and writers about issues from how young models are when they start working to how much or how little they’re allowed to eat. In the third and final installment of the web series, Ziff explored body image, the developmental impacts being a model can have on a young girl, and the (lack of) diversity in the industry.

i realize that people having eating disorders and being encouraged to have eating disorders is awful, horrible and not something I would wish on anyone, however, my question is where does the blame actually lie? being a woman who works in fashion, it’s definitely hard to realize that because i have a size 6 body i am considered chubby/”normal” and would probably border on being a plus size model, but ultimately responsibility lies with each individual to say I am not going to be anorexic/bulemic.

Also taking into consideration that these girls are very young, where are their parents to help guide them through the mess of all this? being a teenager is hard enough and most girls have to battle feelings of inadequacy anyway, and a good amount have eating disorders and aren’t being paid to model. They need guidance and love to show them they don’t need to do this.

all the same, if you are making a choice to be a model and you don’t naturally have a thin figure, you need to choose whether to buy into that standard waif look or not. stand up for yourself and have a soul, but realize that might mean you are not picked to be on a magazine cover. and maybe that’s ok. or maybe if models took a stand together instead of competeing against eachother they could begin to dictate the rules.

the reason there is no union is in order to have a union it would require models banding together. but the amount of competition in the industry…i don’t forsee allowing that to ever happen.

it’s all very sad, but it is a choice to bow down to the standard. which doesn’t make it less sad, but makes it harder to have sympathy.
