Sarah Murdoch Tries To Explain Australia’s Next Top Model Gaffe
On Tuesday Sarah Murdoch made news by announcing the winner of Australia’s Next Top Model incorrectly. She has since tried to explain what happened in an interview with Australian TV personality Karl Stefanovic. Instead of digging into what she says before you’ve had the opportunity to read the transcript, we’ll just let her words speak for themselves:
“The last thing that had been communicated to me through my earpiece was Kelsey 1, Amanda 2… And we had this great idea that we wouldn’t use a card, that we would have it all communicated to me through an earpiece, so that I too in that moment would find out who the winner was. And I thought it will be great. So having heard the last thing was Kelsey 1, Amanda 2, I went into the read… the winner of Australia’s Next Top Model is … nothing. Nothing. So all I knew was the last thing was Kelsey 1, Amanda 2 … The point was, it was going to be communicated through my ear and it didn’t come at that moment. So I went with what I had been told … just before that segment. It is a genuine miscommunication. As far as I knew it was the right call.”
The problem here, though, is that it wasn’t a miscommunication — it was a non-communication. No one told her who the winner was. “Kelsey 1, Amanda 2″ sounds like a control room operator telling the people at his switchboard which cameras should be focused on which model. It’s not like Murdoch hasn’t been on live TV before — she’s not what one could call new to television, and she’s got an IMDB page to prove it. Camera talk is something we’d expect her to know more about.
That said, where were the producers on this one? There’s no room for any sort of delay on live television.
But while the producers messed up and Murdoch made a hasty and thoughtless decision, there is a bright side to this story. Foxtel, the broadcasting company behind the show, released the following statement on Tuesday.
Sarah handled what was a difficult situation with utmost professionalism and grace. Amanda and Kelsey were neck and neck in the voting all night.
We apologise to Kelsey for the error, and Foxtel will be sending her to New York as well as awarding her $25,000 as a prize.
It may not be first place, but it’s something!
