The Sartorialist Thinks Our Job Is ‘Quaint’, Not That We Asked Him
We love The Sartorialist blog, but the man behind it all? — not so much. Scott Schuman hasn’t come across as a particularly warm person in his previous interviews, and brought more of the same at the Fairchild Fashion Media Men’s Wear Summit.
Schuman talked about working in the fashion industry for 15 years before creating his blog, the differences between The Sartorialist and all the other street style blogs out there, and the state of the “fashion writer”. Via WWD:
To him the notion of a “fashion writer” today is “quaint” — and he prefers to use the term “fashion communicators” to describe this growing segment of individuals who he said will one day be able to shoot a runway shot or a video, edit it and have it posted on their own site within an hour.
These people will be able to communicate and engage with their audience — what Schuman is hopeful will transform from “fashion dictation” to the “golden age of fashion communication.”
Yeah, we’re going to wholeheartedly disagree with him on this one. Fashion writers like Cathy Horyn, Suzy Menkes, and Robin Givhan are taught to communicate with their words, not be one-woman production teams armed with an iPhone camera. They might not have the same social media following as, say, BryanBoy, but we’d rather read what they have to say about the latest in the industry. Obviously, the trio of writers (along with many others out there) interact with their readers in their own ways, but instead of tweeting selfies in cabs, they spend most of their time, well, writing and honing their craft.
Clumping those greats under the made-up “fashion communicators” umbrella would just discount their — and our — profession. No thanks, Scott.
