Trendsetting TV Star Tries To Get Tax Rebate For Wardrobe
Check your calendars, kids. Its March 19th — which, if our calculations are to be believed, means that the deadline to file your taxes is officially 22 days away.
We know nothing kills the mood on a Friday like the topic of personal finance, but behold the best idea we’ve seen yet: writing off your wardrobe! It seems British style-setter Sian Williams — host of the BBC’s equivalent to the Today Show — tried to get a rebate for the $4,500 she annually spends on her on-screen clothing.
As the article explains, Williams is “breakfast TV’s answer to Anna Wintour with her sharp collars, posture enhancing belts and neat but approachable bob,” so her appearance really does matter. More, the expensive designer pieces she regularly sports during her show are unlikely to cross over and be worn on weekends because a Chanel cocktail dress hardly qualifies as casual. (Who says?)
Unfortunately, the judge denied her claim and refused her $1800 rebate. Part of the issue, The Guardian notes, is whether Williams’ even paid for her own clothes — or whether they were paid for by a wardrobe allowance from the BBC.
But we can’t fault a girl for trying. It kind of got us thinking about all the recent purchases we want to write off — not to mention the dry cleaning bills. Excuse us while we rifle manically through our bags for receipts.
[Editor's Note: I have a sneaking suspicion this brouhaha has a lot to do with British tax law, and am pretty sure that U.S. law allows for a deduction on work-related expenses that include clothing and/or hair and makeup for TV appearances. Any experts want to weigh in?]
