Lagerfeld Dresses Holocaust Survivor Simone Veil
One of France’s most popular politicians and Holocaust survivor Simone Veil was inducted into L’Academie Francaise last week wearing a custom and Karl Lagerfeld-designed haute version of the uniform. Featuring what WWD describes as “a black tailcoat embroidered with green and gold leaves by Lesage, and a long skirt in black crepe,” Veil’s look was topped off with a ceremonial sword engraved with her Auschwitz number — which remains tattooed on her arm.
Veil is one of the most popular women and politicians in the country and is responsible for legalization abortion during her tenure as Minister of Health in 1975.
L’Academie Francaise is made up of 40 members who serve for life and are known as “immortals.” Veil is only the sixth woman to join the academy since it was founded in 1635.
