What Do Ralph Lauren And Gen. McChrystal Have In Common?

With all the furor and controversy surrounding Michael Hastings‘ profile of General Stanley McChrystal in Rolling Stone, we never thought we’d find an angle that would fall under Styleite’s, um, area of expertise. But you know what they say: behind every good journalist, there’s a family member who works in fashion.

To recap: Hastings, an experienced war correspondent and journalist, profiled Gen. McChrystal, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, for Rolling Stone magazine. McChrystal was shockingly candid and more or less, as Mediaite put it, ripped the Obama administration’s handling of Iraq “to shreds.” McChrystal has since “been relieved of his duties” and Hastings may find himself the recipient of a Pulitzer. (Pure conjecture.)

It’s a fascinating article and worth reading (that is, if you can find it somewhere under Lady Gaga’s machine gun bra), but what struck us is the fashion angle. It turns out talent runs in the Hastings family, as Michael’s cousin is former Teen Vogue editor and current director of celebrity styling at Ralph Lauren, Kimball Hastings. (And yes, that’s an actual title.)

So, the question all of this really begs is: are those Ralph Lauren suits Michael Hastings has been wearing for his numerous primetime interviews?

Anyway, here’s a photo of Kimball with Mischa Barton, which means that Marissa Cooper actually has something in common with the war in Afganistan. This game is fun.

UPDATE: There are actually two fashion connections and another set of seriously smart siblings. Kate Betts, the former editor in chief of Harper’s Bazaar and current contributing editor at TIME magazine, is also the cousin of Will Dana, the editor in chief of Rolling Stone. Do you think we can fit Kevin Bacon in here somehow?
