Stella McCartney Leads A Lovely Life In The Countryside
The story goes like this: Stella met a handsome guy named Alasdhair Willis, they began courting and very quickly decided to go shopping for a country house. Stella just wanted a place to ride her horse, Alasdhair just wanted to be with her and they found a perfect rundown house that they knew could be fixed up to become “a peaceful family home.”
The couple got married in 2003, and had their wedding guests give trees as gifts in an effort to build an arboretum, which is now surrounded by beautiful English gardens on their massive estate. Stella and Alasdhair added three cute kids to the mix (with a fourth on the way!), and they all lead a wonderfully picturesque life together. Sigh.
Stella told Vogue all about her lovely life, and it’s no surprise that her work is inextricably linked to her home:
As in her fashion designs, Stella does not care for red or yellow and is drawn instead to the dusty pastels she loves—in fact, she even gave [head gardener Anthony] Tyler fabric swatches when they were planning the plantings. “You don’t always get what you want,” she says, laughing. “We had tulips that were supposed to be white, and they opened yellow. I couldn’t look at them. I was literally like the Queen from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland: ‘Paint them white!’ ”
In turn, the gardens have generated ideas for her fragrances—and her work. “Sometimes I find a color in the garden I wouldn’t normally think of,” she says. “I enjoy them more in nature, and it makes me want to bring them into the collection. This spring I got a bit bored looking at fashion, and so I started looking at gardening books from the fifties and found these old botanical drawings and just got very inspired by them. So that became a bold part of our spring collection.”
We don’t care what Stefano thinks, Stella is anything but a non-entity. Check out pics of her stunning home below!
