Gilt Calls Stuart Weitzman Shoe Color ‘Negro’

When will retailers realize they need to proofread their product copy?!

This afternoon, a friend sent us a link to a pair of Stuart Weitzman Exit wedge espadrilles that she was eyeing on Gilt. “WHATTTTTT?!” she Gchatted us. They weren’t available in her size, but that wasn’t what was irking her. She noticed that Gilt was calling the shoe color “negro” instead of black. Oh yes, we’ve seen this before.

Back in December, Amazon called a Coclico boot color “Kentucky negro”. This was the result of a lack of translation from the Spanish word for black, which is in fact negro. Coclico explained that its shoes were made in Mallorca, Spain, and that as such, a lot of its paperwork goes straight from the Spanish factory to wholesalers worldwide. They believed Amazon received the Spanish paperwork and didn’t make the necessary translation, resulting in an offensive-seeming description.

Well, wouldn’t you know that the Weitzman sandals were also made in Spain, as are a lot of the company’s other shoes. This pair does not exist on the Stuart Weitzman website anymore, but other black shoes are identified as black or nero (the Italian word for black). We’re guessing that Gilt didn’t think to change the color name from what was written on the (probably Spanish) paperwork they received, but come on! Check your website copy, guys!

(We would also like to note that while Gilt is selling the shoes for $219, you can find them on The Outnet — which calls the color “black” — for $155.)

This is a stupid argument based on a foreign language word’s double use in another tounge. There is as much reason to be upset here as there is when a Spanish speaking American uses the word negro to describe the colour black. I normally really enjoy and agree with a lot of the articles and opinions that you post here, but this one is completely absurd . Quit trying to make arguments and exaggerate racial tensions when there is not a valid reason to do so.

Ha! Gilt doesn’t even carry every size that Stuart Weitzman comes in – only the more common ones.  No size 5 or smaller = no buy for me.

Getting upset over a word from a different language and culture is silly. Any one who has taken a basic Spanish class knows that negro is the word for black. This is common knowledge now when most school systems require Spanish to be taught. Making a fuss over this is making a mountain out of a mole hill. I doubt that any educated, well informed person would seriously be offended by this

There you go again, making a “scandal” out of nothing. Who cares? It’s Spanish, it’s not supposed to be offensive. Please, please, PLEASE stop these dumb “stories” Stylite. You’re above this. Must have been a super slow news day.
