Style.com Confirms Print Magazine, Announces E-Commerce Plans
Many moons ago (or, you know, in April), we speculated on a rumored Style.com print edition. Style.com editor-in-chief Dirk Standen just confirmed the print plans to Business of Fashion, and our guesses were right on the money! What we weren’t banking on, however, was the fashion megasite going the e-commerce route.
The magazine will launch at the end of October, and will include content from Style.com vets Tim Blanks and Nicole Phelps. Focusing on the spring/summer 2012 collections, the print edition will give consumers an insider’s look at the Fashion Week cycle, from New York to London to Milan to Paris. Explains Standen:
“This is 4 weeks, twice a year, with all these people in close proximity under a lot of pressure. There is a real story to be told that maybe hasn’t been told. I think if we can combine emotional narrative storytelling with the kind of authoritative reporting that Style.com already does, we can create something that is fun.”
This is indeed something we’d like to buy! And we’re quite impressed with the turnaround. The last Paris show will bow on Oct. 5, and the Style.com magazine will be on stands by the end of the month. That’s crazy in the print realm! Will it be as well-received in the fashion world as David Chang‘s Lucky Peach was in the food world? We’re not sure, but there is certainly something to be said about fresh approaches to the magazine medium.
Interestingly, Style.com is also adding e-commerce to its oeuvre. Six New York City-based designers are teaming up with the site to make small batches of items from their spring collections to sell at the time of the magazine’s launch. Again with the crazy turnaround! Standen sees this as merely the start of their e-commerce involvement. Dare we say Style.com is poised to dominate the fashion world come fall? Yes, we do.
The magazine is currently available for pre-order on Style.com.
