WATCH: Tavi Talks To The BBC About Fashion Week In Her Bedroom
The BBC conducted a beautifully shot interview with Tavi Gevinson, and it’s really worth a watch.
The video below takes place in Tavi’s bedroom, replete with a lofted bed, tons of records, and 90210 stickers. Her guitar strumming plays in the background while she talks about what it was like breaking into the fashion world four years ago:
“I didn’t look at how many hits my site was getting or anything because I knew that would mess up the fun. People started to take notice of it — Miranda July, Courtney Love. That was exciting. I started getting invited to Fashion Week. When I went to Fashion Week for the first time when I was 13. People were confused about my being there for a few reasons. One was that I was a blogger. The word itself, blog — it’s kind of an ugly word. It doesn’t really sound very legitimate, and fashion as an industry has been really behind on being online. And so I think people were confused and angry that someone younger than them had kind of figured it out. You know, they would talk about how inappropriate it was for someone my age to be at Fashion Week, but this is coming from an industry that fetishizes youth.”
Our favorite bit is at the end, when she rebuffs the haters who don’t understand how she could possibly know about all the (really cool) stuff that came before her time: ”It’s the internet!”
