More Models Reveal Allegations Against Richardson

The most interesting part of Sauers’ piece might be the one exception to Richardson’s high-profile clients: W magazine. According to Sauers’ research, “one source heard a rumor at the time that the ban on Richardson’s work was instituted because [art director] Dan Freedman took offense at a Richardson photo of a model posed with her head in an oven.” Sauers has not yet heard back from Freedman himself.

Naturally, the industry backlash and PR spin has already begun. In an article for The Daily Beast, Jacob Bernstein writes that news of Richardson’s misconduct could have been a major shock, “but it wasn’t, first because everyone in fashion knows Terry Richardson, 44, messes around with the girls he photographs, and second because they know it directly from Terry.”

Bernstein’s piece quotes several industry powerhouses defending the photographer, including Tom Ford (“He’s my favorite photographer to work with”), New York Times Magazine fashion director Anne Christensen (“He’s a funny person, he’s fun to talk to”), and an anonymous fashion source who claims “it’s just impossible for me to see him as a sexual predator.”

Bernstein closes with the following quote from another insider:

“This is an industry filled with crazy people and big personalities. The boundaries are different than they are in a purely corporate enterprise. It’s not IBM, it’s a business with beautiful girls, sex, and malfeasance. To single out one person as some sort of ringleader is absurd. We traffic in women’s bodies.”

And that’s supposed to make it all okay.

    It’s not suprising that Terry Richardson’s behavior is considered acceptable my many of those working in the industry. However, that doesn’t mean that it is actually acceptable behavior that is to be tolerated. He may be considered a gifted photographer/artist but he is also a s@xual predator. Some consider Manson to be an artist but that doesn’t change the fact that he is a murderer.
