Was Tim Gunn’s New Show Canceled Because Of His Awful Fashion Advice?

For the past few months, ABC has aired a talk show in its 2 p.m. time slot called The Revolution. It boasts the tagline “It’s About You,” and the panel of co-hosts includes celebrity trainer Haley Pasternak, women’s health expert Jennifer Ashton (who always wears a lab coat, so you know for sure that she is An Expert), Extreme Makeover: Home Edition‘s Ty Pennington and Tim Gunn.

Yes, Tim Gunn. The man who stood up to Anna Wintour is hosting the show that displaced One Life To Live on ABC’s daytime lineup. Sad and weird, right? America agrees: the show just got canceled. The Washington Post reported last week:

It looks like ABC is not ready to totally give up on the soap opera genre. The network has renewed its one remaining soap, General Hospital, meaning it will be around for its 50th anniversary on April 1, 2013. The lifestyle show The Revolution is not so lucky. It has been cancelled and will air its final episode in July. Cutting The Revolution makes room for Katie Couric’s talk show to premiere in September.

That makes sense from a scheduling perspective, but it also seems like a diplomatic answer for the show’s cancellation. The not-so-diplomatic answer is that the show was really bad — and some of the blame, unfortunately, rests on the shoulders of Tim Gunn.

I realize that the target audience for The Revolution is probably not the most fashion-literate crowd around, but the styling on the models for the show’s recent “winter fashion” style segment was truly bizarre.

Why would Gunn, who has become something of an icon for his taste level, make all of these ladies look so weird? And why did they air a winter fashion segment in April? Frankly, it’s a bit of a relief that the show got the axe. Tim’s got a rep to maintain. We love him and generally think he can do no wrong, but we would be lying if we didn’t think these looks were mega-wack:

Come on Tim isn’t totally to blame for the show’s failure, what about the producers and the E P they have the final word don’t they.  Any way Tim Gunn will be back on PR and is coming to my town next month, can’t wait.

Come on ABC! You didn’t view this crap before deciding to cancel “one life to live”? How on earth could you cancel a well written and well preformed series to give a time slot to a show about random brainless shit? You never reached the audience you wanted to reach because the “dead” can’t work a remote. Nobody with a living brain would have the mentality to sit through an hour of that awful shit

Tim was an administrator at Parson’s and knew ZILCH about fashion prior to his climb thru the ranks.    Still true.

Is it just me or is the world finally realizing that Tim Gunn is a phony? He’s not an “industry insider” – nobody in the fashion industry thinks he’s worth anything…he’s a joke!

  • Carol Zilinger

The Revolution was one of the best afternoon shows on TV. Their tips on fashion, homemake overs, diet, food and seeing the transformation of overweight individuals was very interesting. I hope ABC will rethink its cancellation of a great show. Who wants to watch Couric  - not me. Soaps – enough of them already. This was a show for everyone. I will greatly miss all of the gang on The Revolution. Please bring it back so we have something to watch.

I agree that this is a great show that had almost no chance of survival because of all the negativity voiced by the soap opera fans.  The show wasn’t given a fair chance. It has only been on since January, I wish it had been given more time to establish an audience.

I think that this show is too “scripted”.  Those fashion mistakes that Tim Gunn re-fashions are terrible actors (models) pretending to say the script they are given and  being so fake surprised that they never thought of such a thing.  He is always talking about mixing and matching to make new exciting outfits and the people act shocked that they could do such a thing. Those of us in the real world don’t have summer/winter wardrobes.  We have wardrobes. Anyone without a ton of money mixes and matches every day.  He may be teaching spoiled rich people who buy “outfits” but real people have been mixing and matching since birth. They should have dropped the script like they have done on The Chew which is fun and informative.  The Revolution is boring and the cast does not look like they are having fun.  Could have worked if they loosened up the format a little bit.

All I can say is HA HA ABC! What did everyone tell you? Cancelling OLTL was the biggest mistake they ever made and I doubt any show will work for them in this time slot due to the disgrunteled soap fans- way to go soap fans!

When the clock strikes 12:55 I change my channel to the Foodnet Work. I have boycotted The Chew and The Revolution . I grew up watching my soaps. I have never watched The Chew or The Revolution . I change my channel back to ABC at 3:00 to watch General Hospital. I’m so happy they cancelled the Revolution . Now I hope they cancel the Chew. Horrible show ! I will be boycotting Katie Couric also !

I wish esomeone else would pick up The Revolution.  I’ve enjoyed it.  Years ago I watch OLTL but times change and I like something more up beat.  I don’t agree with everything they do, but I want it to stay!!

The Revolution has not played on my TV, OLTL was the show. When it was cancelled, ABC was not allowed on my box.

  • Psutton1

I love The Revolution!  I have learned so much about health, fitness, how-to-fix-it, positive perspectives, and medical issues.  My most resounding A HA! moment was when the discussion concerned Attn-Deficit-Hyper-Activity.  Ty Pennington gave an example of what goes on in his mind while he is trying to focus on a single task.  Bingo!  That’s me!  This show is interesting, upbeat, and thought provoking.  All the co-hosts are upbeat and their positive outlooks and you-can-do-it attitudes are a real pleasure.

What the heck does ABC/Disney want?   GMA cloned?  GMA has been getting a bit juvenile.  GAA, I will give a chance, but I really don’t need a rehash of the news, famous people gossip and guest musicians in the afternoon.

  • JOHNBROWN

COULD NOT STAND THE SHOW !!!! tHE DOC ALWAYS OVER TALKED EVERYONE

  • Lucky

I love, love, love THE REVOLUTION and will greatly miss it. It was a very informative show and fun to watch. Soaps make my brain stagnant.

  • Ssathar

You want Revolution to return or at least return airing on ABC? Sorry Carol but certain folks from the sounds of things ain’t interested in seeing the return of Revolution.

  • Sara

I’m sorry  to see it go too, especially since they’re replacing it with yet another talk show. Apparently they aren’t interested in those of us who really want substance in our daytime viewing.

  • Angela

It was a horrible show. A full hour of Tim Gunn is too much, and the made women appear so sad and pathetic. The Chew is awesome, fun, optimistic. The Revolution followed the Chew and had no chance.

  • Lise

I couldn’t have said it better.  I actually watched General Hospital for 20 years and realize now what a waste of time that was.  I loved The Revolution and will be turning off the TV now at 1:00 in the afternoon.  I will boycott all soaps.  They have no redeeming social value.

  • Bella

    You need a life girl!!

  • Bella

The Revolution was a decent show. I just couldnt handle Tim Gunn’s mega-annoying nasally voice and gigantically boring personality. I’d rather hear nails on a chalkboard and watch paint dry.

  • Jonnie

Sorry to see the show go, it was a good idea, just had the wrong cast.

  • Lawanda Henderson

I was OLTL fan but I liked the revolution as well. Had great stories of everyday people. Good afternoon america  is hard to sit through for an hour. I watch it for a few minutes if D.L. Hughley is on there but other than I  tend to turn the station til GH comes on. In short the show is not great.   Just saying

  • vegasfashion

Tim Gunn was amazing on the show. He was NOT the only person on this ensemble show, but rather the only really well-known celebrity. His fashion advice was just fine, but the segments about home, cooking, and health were what was truly boring. To me, the show not only had alienated the legion of soap fans, it also alienated the male audience and was not well thought-out or structured very well.

  • drwatsonville

Just face it, Bella. Your comment isn’t coming from a rational reason for disliking Tim, it’s coming from prejudice. Would you really rather hear nails on a blackboard and watch paint dry? I doubt it… and neither can you give an intelligent reason for disliking Tim. You’re coming from a place of prejudice, but it’s okay, therapy helps.

  • vegasfashion

The Chew is awesome? Dear Lord, one of the worst daytime shows ever! The most unattractive cast and they eat in front of an audience? How many times does a person have to sit through recipies for hamburger and pasta? Give me a breatk!
