Lanvin CEO Wants You to Stop Emailing Him
Imagine a day without the mounting stress of watching your inbox fill up with emails you don’t have time to read; without the persistent twirping of email alerts on your phone; without a care for what crucial piece of news or deadline you’re missing by ignoring your unread messages. Most of us call that a vacation, or maybe even a fantasy. Lanvin CEO Thierry Andretta calls that a Wednesday.
Earlier this year, Andretta attempted to manage the stress of having to read hundreds of emails a day by implementing email-free Wednesday. Although we would jump at the opportunity given the option, other members of staff at Lanvin, France’s oldest fashion brand, haven’t followed suit.
“It might be…because they get fewer emails than me,” Andretta suggested. In defense of his email-free movement, he explained, “Generally, I think we have become too accessible. We all lose too much time reading and writing emails and they prevent you from thinking clearly.” We agree, but we can’t help but wonder: how can such an industry titan afford to ignore a full day of emails in the middle of the workweek?
And he’s not the only one. Believe it or not, Andretta wasn’t the first big name in the fashion industry to stray away from modern forms of communication. Last year, we reported Karl Lagerfeld’s wonderfully bizarre interview with Vice Magazine where he revealed his hatred of telephones. “I’m not a chambermaid whom you can ring at every moment,” he argued. Instead of creating a phone-free Friday, Lagerfeld found an alternative, “I prefer faxes because I like to write…Anna Wintour has one. We speak via fax.” Listen to the Kaiser, Andretta. Perhaps a pager would solve your email woes without leaving you incommunicado?
