Tim Gunn Says No Thanks To Johnny Weir

Fashion and the Olympics make strange bedfellows, especially considering how drastically different sports fans and fashion insiders can be. This year, not only were the U.S.A. Olympic teams draped in all-American designer Ralph Lauren, but men’s figure skating star Johnny Weir set the fashion community abuzz with his controversial and creative costumes.

Weir’s interest in fashion is no passing fancy. He has helped his designer, Stephanie Handler, design his skating costumes for years. Handler told WWD, “At this point, he knows enough about the amount of work that goes into designing to do his own. He brings in sketches to me and I work with him to clarify things.”

An ideal first official entree into the fashion world for Weir: guest judging on Project Runway. In an interview with zap2it.com, Weir said that he’d love to be on the reality show. “I can design. I can sketch…I’d want to see what the designers put together and what they did and judge them…”

But Project Runway’s Tim Gunn thinks otherwise:

“I am very matter-of-fact about ice-skating outfits. They are not clothes of the real world. They are costumes, stage clothes. Just because he has a flair for what he wears on the ice doesn’t mean he would be a great judge.”

Sounds like Weir won’t be choosing the top three with Nina, Michael, and Heidi anytime soon.

Tim seems to forget that one of the challenges on a previous season of Project Runway was to design an outfit for figure skater Sasha Cohen, which she judged personally. So come on Tim let the guy have a chance, he may surprise you.
