Tom Ford Is The Only Fashion Person In This Year’s Time 100
We’re pretty happy this morning to join the throng of fashion publications that have announced that Tom Ford has been selected as a member of the Time 100. We’re also just a little miffed to report that among the band of fascinating people who comprise the list, Ford is the lone representative of the fashion community.
Now, we don’t want to take anything away from Ford’s achievement — this is the first time he’s been named to the list, and it’s been a long time coming. His work for Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent in the late 90s and early aughts redefined the way we think of the word sexy and made those companies several hundred million dollars richer than they were before he got to them. His debut women’s show for his eponymous label, way back in September, was not only a collection of beautiful clothes, but its hyper-exclusive nature changed the way we think about the fashion calendar and the way shows are presented. And who wasn’t moved to tears by his Oscar-nominated movie, A Single Man?
Yes, Ford deserves this honor (and quite frankly we’re surprised he didn’t get it sooner). His image is such an indelible part of our culture that it’s even been sullied in used car ads. And while it would feel just as unseemly to list the fashion people who we think should have joined Ford alongside Amy Poehler, Oprah and Barack Obama, we’ll just say this: Nothing is ever physically closer to us than our clothing, and the fashion industry, as a collective of people and businesses, makes that clothing possible. It’s not as important as stem-cell research or social revolution, certainly, but to have only one member of this list come from a community that produces something literally everyone on Earth needs seems a lot like short shrift to us. Last year, only two fashion people (designer Marc Jacobs and model Liya Kebede) made the cut. We’re concerned that next year, we won’t be represented at all.
But for now, we’ve still got a guy in the game. Read Ford’s profile, written by Tom Hank‘s wife Rita Wilson, here.
