TIME WARP: Tom Wolfe and Kurt Vonnegut, Chillin’
Hey, look at what Nerd Boyfriend found — a photograph of Tom Wolfe and Kurt Vonnegut, hanging out at the beach! Obviously, their place in Montauk was indescribably more fun than your place in Montauk.
Wolfe appears to be in his pre-Bonfire “eccentric gentleman” phase, well before going into full-on peacock mode prior to A Man in Full. Vonnegut, of course, was a scruffy hipster grandpa for more or less his entire life. So we’ll guess that this photo is from…the late 70s?
(Note how Wolfe obviously matched his jacket and tie to the colors of the sea and sky, and also how his trousers — cream, rather than white — prevent him from blending in with the lifeguard tower.)
In terms of “great modern authors at the seaside” photos, it’s really only rivalled by Samuel Beckett. And Hunter S. Thompson. And maybe Douglas Adams.
