Tracy Reese And Timo Weiland Weigh In On The Hedi v. Cathy Drama
Fashion Month is finally over, but the biggest story to come out of it was the war of the words between New York Times critic Cathy Horyn and Saint Laurent designer Hedi Slimane. As such, while the focus at last night’s launch party for Timo Weiland and Tracy Reese‘s collaborations with Anthropologie was very much about their designs, the conversations inevitably veered towards the feud.
A quick rundown on the launch: as part of their limited-edition Made in Kind series, Anthropologie asked Reese and Timo Weiland and Alan Eckstein of the label Timo Weiland to create collections for the retailer. Each month, a new group of talent get to show off their wares, and Reese, Weiland, and Eckstein, are part of October’s batch.
At the Anthropologie flagship in Union Square, the Timo Weiland duo said they drew inspiration from “Loulou de La Falaise, and this provincial and romantic character”, while Reese just wanted to create something “tasty” and embellish everything she could. After Weiland and Eckstein showed us through their printed dresses, suede cut-out numbers, and lace tops (and made us take photos of them on their iPhones), and Reese took us through her figure-flattering line of fun frocks, the designers shared their thoughts on the elephant in the room.
Eckstein prefaced his comment with: “We don’t pick sides, I think it’s pretty funny. We’re major fans of both.” He continued:
“[Slimane] is a man that we talked about when we first started, like about his menswear. I think he was able to change things in menswear at Dior Homme. His thing with Cathy is very interesting because fashion is a thing where everyone has a say. It’s interesting. That collection was made for the customer. I think Cathy, she’s very into the art of fashion.”
“You can’t really argue about how talented he is. It’s very different than us, because we tend to be kind of more open. Like, they were able to compare Hedi Slimane and Karl Lagerfeld — like how Karl has never turned his back on anyone even if he’s given a bad review, or anyone who’s hated on him. We’re kind of the same way, whereas, you know, Hedi closed the door. But then you look at some of the retailers, like ones we work with. Mark Lee of Barneys is obsessed with the women’s collection for YSL, and it’s really cool because there is something there, and something that the customer is gonna love.
“I didn’t know that [Cathy] hadn’t been invited to the show. I just thought that was kind of crazy. She comes to [mine] quite often. Criticism is hard to take, I think a good critic is also constructive. It stings in the moment, but then you kind of get through it and you can grow through it. She’s such an important editor, and to not have her at the shows is kind of criminal.”
