Valentino’s Plans For The Future: ‘Be Like Chanel’

Valentino is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, but rather than dwell on the past (glamorous though it undoubtedly is) the brand is looking ahead to bigger and better things.

Today’s Women’s Wear Daily is chock-full of pieces about the house, touching on everything from their newly re-imagined store concept (modern-yet-timeless Italian palazzo) to the one essential piece Valentino Garavani thinks a woman should own from the label (a white lace shirt). In one such article, Pier Paolo Piccioli, who currently shares the head designer role with Maria Grazia Chiuri, hints at what the future might look like:

“The goal now is to grow the company with a precise vision and business model, with an eye on the market. Valentino, as an Italian brand, can be like Chanel in France.”

Rather auspicious then that Rihanna is sporting a red hot Valentino frock on the November cover of Vogue, replacing a Chanel-clad Kiera Knightley on the newsstand. But will a Chanel-ified Valentino mean red, V-emblazoned hula hoop bags? Only time will tell.
