Vanessa Paradis: The French Aren’t More Stylish Than We Are
Like most Americans we long ago came to terms with the fact that no matter how many trips to Paris or how many hours we spent listening to Muzzy on tape, we would never be authentically French. Translation: Never that innate breed of chic that can only come from bathing in the Seine.
Alas, leave it to Vanessa Paradis, poster girl for all things Chanel clad, gap-toothed and muse-worthy to make us feel better about our life on this side of the pond. Captured for a rare spread in the latest issue of Harper’s Bazaar UK wearing only Chanel Haute Couture (of course) the 37-year old singer and playmate of Karl Lagerfeld, told the mag, “I don’t think French women have more style. Maybe it’s because Paris is a city where you walk. In America, everyone drives, and you cannot see what anyone is wearing when they are locked in a car. Here, everyone checks out each other. We communicate with clothes here more and, as a result, inspire one another.”
Of course, it’s our cars! In fact she reveals her sensibility is very much inspired by American of all Americans: Marilyn Monroe! “I adore her as a singer, as an actress and a woman. There is something just divine about her,” she said. Almost makes us love her more than we already did.
