Venus Williams’ Dress Is Short, Tight, And Pink… So What?

For those of you not inside, at your computer, watching the US Open, Venus Williams is currently playing Shahar Peer in the fourth round of the tournament. If you’re wondering the score, as of publication it’s 6-5, for Williams, but that’s neither here nor there. Because according to the announcers, what really matters is Williams’ hot pink, sequin embossed mini-dress.

Williams hadn’t even set up for the first serve when one announcer offered the following quip: “We’ve seen the gems of the game this week — just like we’re seeing now, with all those sparklets… er, sequins, I suppose.”

And, unfortunately, it was only downhill from there. Shortly after Williams’ won the first point, the same announcer observed, “That’s a tight dress — I mean, wow. There better be that stretchy material in there, that’s all I can say.”

While we grimaced, the second announcer cut him off, saying, “Don’t… — You guys know enough not to talk fashion.” And while we’d like to think he was actually commenting on the other announcer’s sartorial know-how,
it seemed more like he knew that line of conversation was going nowhere good.

But, despite the gentle rebuke, less than 10 playing minutes later, this is what we heard:

“That dress seems to be throwing her off her game. Its so short and so tight, she’s gotta pull it down and everything.”

That was followed by a few quips about how Venus should “talk to the designer” of her dress — which is apparently funny because, um, she’s the designer?

As a fashion site, we think there’s something 100% newsworthy about Williams’ choice of attire — especially considering she has her very own clothing line — but we’re not sure what her choice of attire has to do with announcers there to critique and report on her tennis playing.

And concerns over how short or tight her dress is are not only asinine, but patronizing. Williams is a professional tennis player — and a really good one, at that. If she’s wearing something, we’re pretty sure its because she likes it, she’s comfortable in it, and she knows that no matter what she’s wearing, she’s going to play her best.

It’s also worth noting that the dress is the same design as a navy one she wore for Day 5. Of that dress, Williams told ESPN:

“This outfit was really about New York. … It’s like bursts of fireworks. It’s about a celebration of me playing my best obviously at home and kind of doing what I love and being able to wear something fun while I do it. So just always trying to do something fun on the court.”

And that should be all there is to it.

Apologies for the poor quality of Photos 2 through 5.

She can wear what she wants cause she’s good and the rules have gone. This is entertainment. I long for the days when we played tennis in all white clothing. Pretty soon, they can play in bikinis as do the volley ball chicks on the beaches. I wore gym suits. Then, maybe they can topless. Then we will have a Puritanical Revolution and go back to Victorian ages, cause we will be so decadent to have hit bottom we have to start all over, especially having killed many of our babies who got in the way (Billy Jean King)…yep…Viva Whatever…I give up..

I really liked the dress, however, I agree a little with the announcer. When Venus forgot about the dress and started playing to win – the dress was up around her waist making her outfit into a two piece. I really like the design, just wish there was something else added to the dress to make it stay down – maybe just a slit on the side.

Much better than the invisible panties dress from the other tournament.

Tennis is boring without some style. As long lone they cover up down there, it’s all good. James, Koowie.com
