Verushka On Walking For Giles Deacon: I Was A ‘Gimmick’

They just don’t make them like they used to. In a delightfully candid interview with The Daily Mail, iconic and now 71-year-old supermodel Verushka shared her thoughts on models today, high heels, and how she felt about walking in Giles Deacon‘s Spring 2011 show. Hint: not very good.
Verushka isn’t particularly enamored with the state of the modeling industry today. When asked what it was like to be surrounded by teenagers at the Giles show, she responded, “I was in my 20s when I made the movie [Antonioni's Blow Up] and found success. We were women, not children.”
And it only goes south from there. Verushka doesn’t think very much of designers these days either, calling her casting in Giles’ show “a gimmick” and asserting that “designers no longer have the skills to dress women who are not children with bodies that look like ironing boards.” As for her specific look, “I didn’t like the make-up in the show, and didn’t think much of the dress.” Ouch.
But the best part of the interview might be the spitfire’s thoughts on heels. “In the Sixties, fashion was about liberation. It was about setting women free; it wasn’t about being unable to walk.” Preaching to the choir, Verushka. You’re preaching to the choir.
