Victoria Beckham Started A Fashion Line Just To Prove She Could Do It
Maybe one of the reasons people can be so dismissive about Victoria Beckham‘s various forays into the fashion industry don’t have so much to do with the fact that she’s a celebrity as they do with the fact that they’ve never heard her talk about running a business. Because when that happens, it sounds like Posh Spice knows exactly what she’s doing.
Beckham, whose main and secondary clothing lines have both been met with critical acclaim, sat down with Women’s Wear Daily executive editor Bridget Foley yesterday during WWD‘s annual CEO Summit, a meeting of the minds that run the business end of the fashion industry. The two talked about everything from why Beckham started her fashion business to how fast the business is growing in front of an audience of people who are now Beckham’s rag trade peers. And as it turns out, Beckham wasn’t at all concerned about what any of them would think about her fashion line — she did it because she’s always loved fashion, and wanted to prove to herself that she could create a brand.
“I was very aware of people’s preconceptions, but I never went into the fashion industry trying to prove myself to anybody other than myself. I was just following my dreams, doing what I love to do,” Beckham said. “It’s my passion to make women feel empowered, feel beautiful, and feel confident.”
And she does. And people love it. And by her own figures, the business is growing exponentially.
“In the first collection we produced 400 dresses and we had nine retail partners internationally, and now we’re producing about 500 pieces with all categories in just over 300 stores worldwide,” said Beckham. “Though I’m trying to take baby steps, the business is growing very quickly. Our turnover year-over-year has increased over 120 percent. I think to anyone’s standards that’s very impressive.”
