WATCH: Victoria’s Secret Gets Awkward Airtime On Fox

Most of the time, people who write advertorials and arrange for television product promotions try as hard as they can to make shilling look like normal editorial coverage. We’ve never really seen a half-decent PR person or spokesmodel botch a TV news segment so as to make it an overtly obvious plug for their product.
Never, that is, until this morning, when Victoria’s Secret models Chanel Iman, Candice Swanepoel and Erin Heatherton made an appearance on Fox and Friends to talk about how they stay confident. By which we mean they spent three minutes talking up the company’s brand new Incredible Bra, and generally being awkward with Steve Doocy and Brian Kilmeade.
We’ve got to hand it to whoever prepared these girls for the interview — they really stayed on message. Within ten seconds of being introduced, Chanel starts lauding the bra like it’s the best thing to happen since the legging (the legging being fashion’s equivalent to sliced bread). Then Erin starts in on how ‘real women’ gave the bra it’s name because they just kept saying that it’s, well, incredible.
At the height of the segment’s drama, Doocy suggests that the real news is that Victoria’s Secret has reinvented the bra. Better advertising copy has never been written.
At the end of the trainwreck, it’s hard to feel bad for anyone involved. The girls are there because it’s their job, and it’s hard to believe that Fox News didn’t get at least a few shekels out of this clip. We know everyone is playing the game nowadays, especially in suffering businesses like media and apparel. But this mess is inexcusably transparent and kinda sad.
(PS – Chanel is one of our favorites, and Doocy and Kilmeade snubbed her by not addressing her directly. Wasn’t that in the script?!)
