PHOTOS: Vogue Australia Publishes First Plus Size Spread Ever

If you’re not familiar with model Robyn Lawley yet, you should be. She is, besides gorgeous, one of the three stunners featured on that now legendary cover of Vogue Italia. She is also, as of their August issue, the first plus size model to ever be featured in Vogue Australia.

Not only is this spread beautifully shot and styled, it also has the all too rare occurrence of a plus-size model actually modeling, you know, clothes. Even the Vogue Italia cover spread, while aesthetically amazing, was super naked.

The only issue we take with the editorial is that it’s called “Curve” and is tag-lined with the word, “va-va-voom.” We can’t wait for the day when a plus-size model is featured as unobtrusively as a straight-sized model.

Editor in chief Kirstie Clements addressed the shoot in her editor’s letter and while we appreciate her honesty, we could have used with a little less condescension and surprise. Any emphasis is ours.

“This is the first time Vogue Australia has shot a larger model and of course now that we have done it, I ask myself why we didn’t do it sooner. But that’s because Robyn is especially gorgeous. I went to the shoot to meet her and was transfixed by her beauty and poise. She is a truly super duper model. When a plus size model first turns up to the studio, she may be an anomaly to a team normally used to working with size 6’s, but once photographer Max Doyle started shooting Robyn, we quickly readjusted our preconceived notions of beauty. She doesn’t actually look plus size to me at all now. I said to a colleague on set later that day, “And men like curves don’t they?” He looked at me like I was an idiot. “Yes Kirsty, we certainly do” was his laconic reply. It’s an interesting conversation – the world of high fashion and fuller-figured women. One that needs to be continued”.

Indeed.

The photos are below. Take a look and tell us what you think.

    Doesn’t really seems plus-size. And it’s Awesome!!!

  • Blueys54

This is not ‘plus-size’, it’s average. She is beautiful of course.

“She doesn’t actually look plus size to me at all now” Kirstie Clements says. That’s the whole problem. This is a skinny girl, and she’s being passed off as plus-size. This is an insult to full-figured women. Put a model who is a U.S. size 18 in the magazine, and then it would be worth getting excited about. But this is just another case of a model who is skinny, and looks skinny. No progress here.

Until the models in magazines actually LOOK plus-size, it’s all for nothing.

Where and how is she “plus size”?

  • Scoligan

amen to that! i agree she is not plus sized, no wonder most models are sick from making themselves throw up or not eating. women who are average and gorgeous are considered plus size wth!

  • Mchartier

she is gorgeous but just because she is curvier does not make her a plus size model. Your getting there, but take the next leap and get a real full figured plus size model who wears larger than a size 14/16

  • nani

Where exactly is she plus size. This world is so judgmental

  • Xstarlet86x

Yea she isn’t plus size at all! I would love to look like that. I’m a size 18, put someone my size or higher up and then people will be happy!

What Kirstie Clements is basically saying is that they only featured Robyn because she is SO beautiful that it makes you overlook her size. It astounds her that a non-anorexic woman could have beauty and poise. Oh, and the most important thing would be that men like it, right, since they are Vogue’s main target group.
I do wonder if she is aware that her magazine is not Playboy and what her opinion of her own (rather average) figure might be.

Of course she looks beautiful, everybody does in “vogue”, i mean, thank god there´s photoshop :P

nevertheless, it´s a shame how everybody believes that being damn skinny is the only way to be beautiful.

of  course there are skinny girls which are gorgeous,
but having curves (and i mean CURVES, not like on the photo) doesnt mean ugliness automatically.

i believe beauty lies in the eye of the beholder
PS: has anyone every realized that it´s gay/metro/weird fashion designers and women saying that being skinny is super-attractive? so if you wanna become a men´s dream woman: listen to MEN!

    thank you!

Go Robyn! Australian models are always gorgeous! Even super-talented….look at what aussie fashion models the NERVO twins are making of themselves! :) http://youtu.be/HqdsbPJbM0g

She is not plus-size. She is skinny. SKINNY. And she is beautiful. But I wish this world would not call her plus size. Even Lizzie Miller being called plus-size is pushing it, for my money. If Robyn Lawley is plus-size, then the definition of plus-size is “not skeletal.”
