The Best And Worst Covers Of The Month: Kim v. Isabella
Some magazine covers are great and some magazine covers are terrible. And today we have one perfect example of each.
The ever flawless (and Freebie List-worthy) Isabella Rossellini graces the cover of Vogue Italia’s latest issue in a sun-drenched shot by Steven Meisel. Why is it so great? Because it features Rossellini, who has decades of work and deserving accolades under her belt, because she looks preternaturally beautiful — but no less natural for it, and because its unadorned, and effortless.
For contrast, the ever-present (yes, even on our site) Kim Kardashian gives her best Photoshop face on the cover of Esquire Mexico, in a criss-cross cut-out black swimsuit set against a background of boxes, mixed fonts, and neon yellows. We won’t even comment on the fact that her belly button looks like it was painted on with a couple mouse clicks or that the “bust-line” (if we can be so generous) of her suit defies both logic and gravity. (Oh, whoops, we just did.)
We have no doubt which cover will sell more issues (Kim’s), but that doesn’t mean we have to be happy about it.
