Vogue Italia Declares ‘Rapper Style’ A ‘Trend’ Started By ‘Michael Jordan’

Sometimes Vogue Italia does things that move the conversation forward, and sometimes it does things that are terribly out of touch.

The latest trend on the magazine’s radar is “rapper style”, which they claim is “making a comeback next season”: “It was launched in the ’90s with basketball champion Michael Jordan appearing in commercials for Nike. Since then rappers have invaded the world with their hits proposing not only their sound but also their style.”

Michael Jordan…what?! This makes little to no sense. And what do they define as rapper style exactly? Low-slung pants (“pants should never be tight-fitting, see those sported by Jay-Z”), fur, hoodies, sneakers, and gold nameplate necklaces. This of course comes on the heels of the Haute Mess controversy — and lest you forget, last summer the magazine declared that “slave earrings” were a thing.

Get it together, Vogue Italia. Your mightily misinformed generalizations aren’t doing you any favors.
