Here’s Your First Look At Vogue‘s June 2012 Olympics Cover!

Looks like even Anna Wintour isn’t immune to Olympics fever! The first image of Vogue’s June 2012 issue has just leaked, and the cover stars are none other than Team USA stars Hope Solo, Ryan Lochte, and Serena Williams.

Just days after the Olympic torch was lit in Greece, we stateside are bringing our own heat to the games – in the form of scantily clad athletes! It’s just the American way.

As of late the magazine has been on an impressive streak – eschewing the usual waifish starlets in favor of healthier-looking, seriously accomplished women. First Adele got dolled up for the April cover, then J. Lo talked dress size in May’s “Shape” issue, and now we have a group of world class athletes showing off big smiles and even bigger muscles. Perhaps we’re already seeing Vogue‘s Health Initiative in action.

The execution is also a big time improvement from their last sports cover (that would be the notoriously ill-advised Gisele/LeBron James disaster), but we think the swimsuits chosen are rather blah. Maybe red, white, and blue would have been a little too literal, but how about a little more color for the female stars? As for Lochte’s attire….well, you won’t hear any complaints from us (nor most Vogue readers, we imagine.) The athlete also has the distinction of being only the fourth man ever featured on the cover of the magazine (the others being George Clooney, Richard Gere, and, of course, LeBron James.)

Not up on your Olympic hopefuls? Here’s a cheatsheet: Solo is the goalkeeper for the American soccer team (yes, the one that took home the gold in 2008), Lochte is a swimmer and six-time Olympic medalist, and Serena Williams is, well, Serena Williams. Don’t even try to tell us you’ve never heard of her.

So tell us, what do you think of the cover?

I didn’t see this one coming that’s for sure!!! WOW, I’m uh lol speechless, I don’t know what to think. Ok, calm down lol, I mean, it doesn’t look high fashion or super glamorous that’s for sure, then, uh, I mean these are unusual characters to be featured in Vogue and moreover on the cover. The problem I have is that, this Vogue cover doesn’t look like a Vogue cover, it seems yeah very sporty/men’s health/weird, where is the vibe of high fashion, society and chic which made Vogue as this global brand and identity of style and refinement? This looks very yeah I don’t know, weird. Of course it’s a fresh air to see new faces but the fonts + coverstars + theme (which we already had a shape issue) don’t make me feel excited. Will wait the video of the covershoot + editorials to give my final opinion…

This is Vogues idea of promoting America’s Olympic hopefuls?  I see a guy in dark shorts, & two gals in humdrum bathing suits, pretending they’re running in the sand. How does that scene/pose, represent the USA & the July 2012 summer Olympics?

Why isn’t there a US flag on the cover? Why does the cover look like models working a swimsuit shoot, at the beach?
Where’s the red white & blue swimsuits, the US Olympic hopefuls should be displaying so proudly?

Epic fail. A chance to shine gone.
