WATCH: Willow Smith’s “21st Century Girl” Video Is Here!

We’ve been waiting a long time for Willow Smith to release her “21st Century Girl” video. Like, a long time. The “Whip My Hair” video came out all the way back in October! But now the video is finally here, and we kind of don’t love it?

Well, we must preface this by saying we love the song. “I’m the type of chick that likes to rock the beat” is probably our favorite line, because how could it not be? But the video feels rather average. There’s an old lady (who, as pointed out by our astute commenters, is played by the legendary Cicely Tyson!) who finds a bone or a rock or something, and then she conjures Willow from the sand, and the 10-year-old postures for about four minutes, and she only wears a few different outfits and there is no hair heart. While the video for “Whip My Hair” felt very much about the collective, “21st Century Girl” feels all about Willow, which we normally wouldn’t mind, but ugh. Something about the whole thing doesn’t quite work.

What do you think? Are we totally wrong? Is the video brilliant, or just merely okay? (And, yes, we’ve catalogued the outfits for you below.)

You’re not going to like my answer but, mediorce is generous. I an not a fan of hers like the people from Styleite. Willow Smith is a creation of music executives, PR people and her parents just like Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber among others. She will eventually burn out as most other acts like this do. If nothing else she lose her audience as soon as she and her audience grow up. Let’s just hope that she doesn’t lose herself when that happens.

“The 10-year-old postures for about four minutes”?? Uhm, she and a bunch of fellow 10 year olds pull a city out of the sand. I think that’s a little more than posturing for 4 minutes.

“There’s an old lady who finds a bone or a rock or something”, that “old lady” is actually legendary actress Cicely Tyson. Just FYI.

I think Willow Smith is an incredible 10 year old girl. I thought the video was great and I love the song too! Those who have negative opinions of her have a right to their own opinions but, do not be surprised if this little one stays around for a very long time. If she is this good already at 10 years old, imagine how much she could impove by the time she is 20. Somebody stated earlier in a post that she would probably burn out. Remember that Michael Jackson was only 6 when he started out. And just for the record, Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber are still going strong.

    That was embarrassing…

The “inch and a mile” line was too much for me…so is the “chick” reference. A 10 year old child has no relevance to me and my ADULT life…yuck.
