75 Years Of Oz: See Fashion Evolve From The Wizard Of Oz To Oz The Great

Oz the Great and Powerful dominated the box office this weekend, raking in $80 million nationwide in ticket sales, but it could never have come to be if Judy Garland hadn’t donned ruby slippers and tapped her heels three times nearly 75 years ago. The Wizard of Oz has had no shortage of on-screen interpretations, but we’re taking a look at three of its best: the Disney film in theaters now, 1978′s Motown/Michael Jackson version The Wiz, and the original 1939 flick that started it all.

James Franco‘s Oz owes his dapper look to the original Wizard, while in The Wiz, Richard Pryor wore a pair of sloppy pajamas that would never have gotten past the gates of the Emerald City. Glinda went from a fairy princess look to a glammed-up ’70s Good Witch and, for Michelle Wiliams’ character, got a modern update in a sleek white gown and gilded tiara.

From The Wizard to Dorothy to The Wicked Witch of the West, see how the characters have changed over the years in the gallery below:
