Should Lady Boxers Have To Wear Skirts In The Olympics?
Should female boxers wear…skirts?
Ugh. Just after women’s boxing finally gets recognized as an Olympic sport (it will make its Olympic debut next year in London), this happens. The International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) has suggested lady boxers wear skirts to make them stand out from dude boxers. Least sound argument ever? Probably.
The group will meet in January to come up with a formal recommendation. They explained in a statement: “AIBA is seeking a consensus from the worldwide boxing family and the wider public for reference purposes.” That “worldwide boxing family” isn’t so into the skirt situation, and rightly so. At last month’s European Championships, Poland and Romania were the only countries to have fighters wear skirts.
Three-time world champion Katie Taylor summed up her feelings quite nicely: “I don’t even wear miniskirts on a night out, so I definitely won’t be wearing miniskirts in the ring.”
Tell ‘em, Katie!
