Yohji Yamamoto To Direct His First Film (And Design The Costumes!)

At this weekend’s Hyères International Festival of Fashion and Photography in France, designer Yohji Yamamoto announced that he’s directing his first ever feature film.

Details have yet to be released, but WWD reports that the designer isn’t writing the script and that he expects the movie to be finished in two years — at the earliest. Yamamoto will presumably design the costumes and said that he often finds movie costumes ugly:

“Have you ever experienced after starting to watch a movie that because of the ugly costumes, you cannot keep on watching? Have you ever experienced that? I have a lot. So in that respect costume [design] is very important.”

That might explain why he doesn’t like to design costumes for film:

“I don’t want to kill the characters of the actors and actresses with my ego. [Costume designers] have to know which fashions and which trends were running at which time, so their knowledge of past clothing is sometimes better than ours.”

Interesting how Yohji Yamamoto is a renaissance man when it comes to intertwining his passions.  Being able to direct a picture while outfitting the characters with his designs makes for a successful cross-marketing campaign.  Great post.
