You’re all doing the song of the summer wrong. Whether you’re firmly in the “Rude” camp or you’re “Fancy” all the way, from your first cigarette to your last dying day, it doesn’t even matter because I’m calling shenanigans on it all. I mean, sure, I don’t put much value in this idea of a “summer song” (everyone knows the real battle is for the Wilhelm Scream of summer) but if I did — if I were one of you sheeple with your brown skin shinin’ in the sun, your hair combed back and your sunglasses on — I would have called the battle last night. While your favorite contenders were busy taking Instagram photos and perfecting their black voice (I said it #srynotsry), Reggie Watts snuck in under the radar and seized Summer 2014 with a stirring, impassioned ballad about a horse.
“I Once Knew A Horse”, soon to be known as “That Song Playing On Every Radio Station”, is a beautiful ode off Watts’ upcoming LP, Scaves & Cabbages. Watch Watts’ performance from last night’s Conan (featuring special appearances by ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons and Coheed & Cambria’s Travis Stever) and just see if you’re interested in whether Chris Brown‘s hos are loyal ever again. I dare you.
