I’m still reeling over John Legend‘s latest music video. It sends a great message and doesn’t only show a broad diversity of female beauty—it also depicts women as more than simply pretty objects. The women Legend seems to be singing to are shown lifting heavy weights, learning to brush their teeth, studying, being friends, and defying beauty standards by revealing what others might perceive as flaws. I sort of expected it to feel like a Dove commercial, but it’s way way better (plus, a Laverne Cox cameo never hurt anyone).
But coupled with the music video is an equally poignant behind-the-scenes, which gives voices to the women in the original. It’s called “When I Look In the Mirror,” and it highlights the reflective answers the girls and women in “You & I” each gave when asked what they see when they look in the mirror.
I don’t know about you, but I think this video is even more thought-provoking that John Legend’s emotional song. It shows how different women feel about what they see in the mirror, and really makes you reflect on how you perceive yourself. So if you’re looking to get introspective this Sunday, consider this video the perfect jumping off place.
