12 Actually Good Lollapalooza Artists You Need to Hear Now

It ain't all Skrillex.

It’s here! It’s clear! It’s kind of crap, but that doesn’t really matter since three-day passes are sold out anyway (single days and VIPs go on sale 10am CST, if you’re interested). But Lollapalooza is like Fashion Week, and not just because there’s a prevalence of racist headwear. Smaller things are easier to actually see stuff at, and because they all get stuck with early slots, you can head straight to the the happy pinnacle of day drunk without worrying about what shape you’re going to be in when Calvin Harris takes the stage at 11pm. Yay for early nights! That said, Nas and Lorde provide plenty of reason to risk getting smooshed under the armpit of a complete stranger. In that respect, Lollapalooza is more like the uptown 4 train.

Here are 12 things we’re actually super excited to hear this year:

1. Lorde
Because duh.

2. Childish Gambino
Obviously try to see this while you’re riding the ferris wheel.

3. Courtney Barnett
This deadpan Australian singer/songwriter is the Aubrey Plaza of pop music. She also does a mean cover of Kanye West‘s “Black Skinhead.”

4. Darkside
This Nicolas Jaar and Dave Harrington project is the perfect blend of silvery falsetto and bluesy guitar. Jaar is one of the few people who can make an enormous stage feel intimate.

5. Jhené Aiko
The Los Angelino has been around 10 years now(!) and is finally releasing her debut album this year. Know (how to pronounce) her name now.

6. Jagwar Ma
Another gem from Australia’s psych/dance scene.

7. Chance the Rapper
Chancelor Bennett has lent his verses to collabs with everyone from Twista to James Blake, and most recently to this dreamlike track with our favorite SZA.

8. Nas
Two decades later, he’s still got it.

9. Lykke Li
She has a new album coming in May, and here’s one of many magical tracks.

10. Temples
This neo-psyche four-piece comes Anna Suicertified.

11. Flume
Who needs drugs when you have this irritatingly young producer?

12. Warpaint
Can you believe they’ve been around for 10 years?
