17 Swinging ’60s Minis for Jean Shrimpton’s Birthday

“I never liked being photographed. I just happened to be good at it,” Jean Shrimpton told The Guardian in 2011. Reluctant icon she might be, but that just makes us love her even more.

Shrimpton, original It Girl, youthquaker extraordinaire and the face of Swinging ’60s London, has many accolades to her name. But one of our favorites is originator of the miniskirt, a role took on unintentionally when she arrived for the Victoria Derby in Melbourne, Australia wearing a white shift dress designed by Colin Rolfe which ended 10 cm (3.9 in) above her knees. The hemline caused a shock that was felt the world over, and thus the mini’s exponential soar to popularity.

In honor of The Shrimp turning 71 today, we’ve rounded up 17 short skirts for channeling her DGAF strain of chic. Our unwilling icon would have gone bare-legged, but since it’s almost winter, we won’t label you a prude for pairing them with tights.
