We’ve heard of dead models selling magazines, but dead photographers lensing calendars? A more interesting phenomenon, but that’s precisely what’s happening for Pirelli’s 2014 edition.
To commemorate 50 years of the greatest tyre marketing strategy in history, the 2014 edition will be a previously unpublished calendar shot by the late Helmut Newton in 1986. Two calendars were commissioned that year, with Britain enlisting Bert Stern and Italy Newton, causing a squabble about which one would go to print.
Newtown’s was abandoned, completed by his assistants Manuela Pavesi and Xavier Alloncle, and stored in the Pirelli archives as a ‘family heirloom’.
The legendary GWC might have pioneered porno chic long before Terry Richardson was putting girls in garbage cans, but this calendar won’t just feature black T&A. Newton was additionally given the task of including the Pirelli product in all of the shots, making 2014 a bonus year for boob lovers, petrol heads and late ’80s nostalgics alike. It features 12 black and white fine art photographs, plus 28 behind-the-scenes images, all shot in Monte Carlo and Chianti. See four of Newton’s shots below.
