With the Academy Awards, we more or less always know what we’re getting. A flood of Marchesa here (let’s not forget to kiss up to Mr. Weinstein, ladies), and a touch of Carolina Herrera there — for those classic “old Hollywood” types. Then there are the Grammy’s: the awards ceremony where celebrities feel they have the freedom to dress a little edgier. The Academy Of Country Music Awards are a different beast entirely. The hair is bigger and the dresses are glitzier, at least that’s the way it’s supposed to be. Why expect any different this year, especially considering the awards were held in Vegas? Right? Wrong.
Instead of big hair and big dresses, we saw straight, pulled-back hair and short or fitted dresses. There was only a touch of glitter and an incredibly surprising amount of couture designer dresses considering the occasion; who would have thought Alber Elbaz would have a dress walking down this carpet?
We applaud the few that got A+ and condemn those who were sleeping while choosing what to wear (we’re talking to you Nicole Kidman), but mostly, we were tired. While we rarely opt for huge blow outs or fairy dust sprinkled gowns, at least they make us laugh. This year, like most of the other awards shows we’ve watched, were a bit dull on the carpet.
So without further ado, we present you with the good, the bad, and the ugly from the red carpets at the American Country Music Awards.
Taylor Swift in Marchesa
It’s difficult to not love everything Taylor Swift does. Sartorially, we generally have to remind ourselves that she is young, and still deserves a chance to wear fairy princess dresses that sparkle with fairy dust. But ever since the Grammy’s, our Tay-Tay has been growing up, in age and in style. Taylor ditched her usual glitter-glam for a grayish-purple and embroidered Marchesa gown. While the color seems a little grandma-like, we love the fit of the gown and the floral detailing. The dress could have done without so much chiffon layering at the bottom — it’s a bit Miss Havisham — but all in all we think Swift’s gown is a great foray into a more adult wardrobe.
LeAnn Rimes in Lanvin
LeAnn is not someone we would have thought even knew what Lanvin was. Let’s face it, this country music star isn’t necessarily known for her classy dress choices. In fact, I can’t remember one thing she’s ever worn other than a white tee shirt and jeans in her music videos. (By the way, “How Do I Live” is still one of the best love songs ever.) Loving the color choice; navy blue with blonde hair is always a good combination. And the more mature and creative version of a ruffle at the top is classically chic. But the bottom of the dress seems a bit snug. I have a feeling Mr. Elbaz did not intend for it to ride up awkwardly as it does.
