Agent Provocateur is known for raunchy lingerie and naughty ad campaigns, which definitely works when selling undies. But the brand has just been asked by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) to pull its latest video due to distressing and sexual graphics.
The video in question starts off with a woman, dressed a white nightgown with red trim, receiving prank phone calls. After she hangs up for the second time, models wearing revealing lingerie pop up out of nowhere, drag the woman around, and scare her by doing weird fetish things. By the end, she’s converted into a full-fledged Agent Provocateur model.
The ad is available for all to see on Agent Procovateur’s website, which doesn’t have an age restriction controls. The ASA calls the lack thereof irresponsible, and says that the company needs to take more precautions:
“Because of the sexually graphic, and at times distressing, nature of the video and the potential for children to share a web-link relatively easily we concluded that it was unsuitable for display on an openly-accessible website where it might be viewed by children.”
An Agent Provocateur spokesperson achknowledged the issue, but hasn’t pulled the ad. Instead, the company added an age restriction notification before the video plays, which actually doesn’t really stop teens from clicking the play button. But it’s better than nothing, we guess.
“Agent Provocateur understands that not all of its content will be appreciated by every viewing audience and out of respect to this one complaint have decided to put a brief warning before this particular video to ensure viewers are alerted to its content. Our customers are incredibly important to us and whilst we do not wish to offend we do hope to provoke – something the majority of our customers value us for.”
We watched the video ourselves, and agree that it’s completely inappropriate for children. And possibly for adults as well — we were just generally creeped out by the rest of the video.
