That’s it, folks. The show’s over. And by show, we mean the totally incredible Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty exhibit at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. But oh, did it have a successful run!
Let’s do a by-the-numbers, shall we?
• 661,509: Total visitors who saw Savage Beauty during its three-month run from May 4 to August 7
• 80,000: People who saw the exhibit in its final week
• 50: Dollars it cost to see Savage Beauty during special Monday hours
• 17,000: People who saw the show on those eight Mondays
• 1: Rank among the Costume Institute’s most popular exhibits
• 8: Rank among the Met’s most popular exhibits
• 23,000: New members who joined the museum during the past three months
• 100,000: Catalogs sold
So, yeah, impressive. For context, the Met’s best-selling exhibit was the four-month showing (spanning 1978 and 1979) of Treasures of Tutankhamun with 1,360,957 visitors. The runner-up was Mona Lisa, which saw 1,077,521 visitors in just one month in ’63. The previous record for a Costume Institute exhibit was held by 2008′s Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy, which 576,000 people saw.
The exhibit remained hot up until the very end, with Joe Zee squeezing in a morning viewing yesterday and Anna Wintour showing up at the museum to sign catalogs last night (our intern Chloe saw her!). Sadly, according to the release we received: “The exhibition could not be extended further because the galleries need to be turned over for the preparation of the exhibition Wonder of the Age: Master Painters of India, 1100-1900, which will open on September 28.” Sigh.
